Read NDVI and vegetation maps

Interpret vegetation index layers, cloud cover, and date selections for a field.

Vegetation indices turn Sentinel-2 bands into maps of greenness, moisture, or canopy structure. NDVI is the default starting point for crop condition.

What the values mean

  • NDVI — green biomass. Higher values (toward 0.6–0.9) usually mean denser, healthier vegetation. Bare soil and water sit much lower.
  • NDMI — canopy moisture. Useful when you care about water stress more than biomass.
  • NDRE — red-edge index; often more sensitive mid-season in dense canopies.
  • SAVI / EVI — alternatives when soil background or saturation is a problem.

How to generate a map

  1. Set the field and mode

    Draw or upload a boundary. Choose Vegetation Indices and the index you need. Dataset is Sentinel-2 MSI Harmonized (L2A).

  2. Control clouds

    Use the cloud-cover slider (about 20% is a practical start). Optionally enable Cloud Masking so QA60 flags drop cloudy pixels.

  3. Choose a date window

    A short recent window is easier to interpret than a whole season. If the collection is empty, widen the dates or raise allowed cloud cover.

  4. Read the map and stats

    Inspect the color ramp, histogram, and summary statistics for the polygon. Compare against a known healthy stand in the same municipality before you call a field “stressed.”

Cloud, haze, standing water, and mixed field edges all pull NDVI down. Confirm with a true-color composite (Image Analysis mode) when a result looks unexpected.
